CRAPET SECTION

This Centre is producing Woolen Yarn Carpet of various sizes and quality. Initially when this center was established, there was almost more than 50 weavers and at present we hardly have 7-8 weavers because of the low wages and all of them are the members of the society. This is one of the unit which helps women race of the society to make some income. But the members does not treat this work as their main source of income, they work as a part time job. The society has its own Building with all the loom facility and all of them work together from morning to evening. We use the best quality woolen yarn known as 100% New Zealand wool. All the raw materials related with the handicraft section are being purchased from Panipat, Haryana, India. They use pure vegetable dyes. In Sikkim state, there are only two major carpet weaving center, one belongs to the government of Sikkim, Industry Department where they give training to the local people and next to that is our Society. There is no comparison between these two centers. Our society’s carpet finished product is much better than the government center. Recently, even in a tourist guide book, they have included our center as one of the main attraction point. The main customer target is the local people of the district.

PROBLEMS:

The Carpet Centre of the society is running smoothly and there is more demand in the market but due to the low wages and lack of weavers, we couldn’t fulfill the demand of the customers. The Society couldn’t even compromise in wages too.

ALTERNATIVE MEASURES:

The hand woven carpets are having high demand in foreign countries but due to not having Export license, the society could not move further. If we could procure an export License then the society could increase the wages and the numbers of weavers will definitely increase. So the society must try to obtain an export license and the society might need assistance and help from the Govt. to precede the same.
